Pattern Earth is an unpublished science fiction novel, complete at 81,000 words, written by mathematician Anthony Bonato. The story is set in the not-too-distant future of 2025.
Black, floating spheres appear out of nowhere onto the streets of the metropolitan cities of the globe, flashing strange mathematical and geometrical messages on their surfaces. These extraterrestrial ‘orbs’ first appear in Toronto, then New York, Beijing, London, and so on, causing millions of people to vanish without trace. In response to the alien invasion, Agent Ji Choi of the mysterious organization Central mobilizes the M-team: a group of the planet’s best mathematical minds whose mission is to communicate with the orbs.
One of Choi’s must haves on the M-team is Kris Argentia, a sixteen-year-old mathematics prodigy. Kris’s solution to the Riemann hypothesis, the world’s deepest and until now un-solved mathematical problem, may be the key to communicating with the orbs. But, not everyone wants them to succeed. With millions missing, more orbs appearing, and a mass exodus from the major cities, Kris begins to suspect that the undertaking of the M-team is not as peace-oriented as it first seemed.
